The Pemberton Township Volunteer Fire Department applied for a Fire Station Construction Grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 (Public Law 111-5).  Congress appropriated a total of $210 million for this Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 program. The Fire Department's grant application seeks $727,000 to fund a major building renovation to the Presidential Lakes Fire & Rescue fire station. The renovation plan calls for replacement of the roof and HVAC system, ADA compliant bathrooms, new septic system, installation of smoke detectors and a sprinkler system, improvements to the electrical system, facade improvements, and construction of sleeping quarters and a training area. Importantly, renovating the firehouse will improve the station’s response time, which will save more lives and property. Firefighters residing at the station will receive more training and will allow them to respond more quickly to fire incidents. Adding the sleeping quarters will also allow Presidential Lakes Fire and Rescue members to provide mutual aid to neighboring rural municipalities more quickly.

Municipal officials today announced that Department of Public Works employees will resume repair work next week at Dam #1 adjacent to the Choctaw Drive bridge in the Country Lakes residential development.

The failure of numerous flashboards spanning horizontally between the concrete piers was observed by residents last weekend, and it is believed that the lake on the upstream side of the dam lost about one foot of water by Tuesday morning. A Public Works crew attempted to make repairs yesterday by blocking a section of the spillway with hundreds of sand bags; however, when the damaged flashboards were removed substantial pressure created by water rushing between the concrete piers caused most of the sand bags to wash downstream.

One Public Works Department employee reported an injury and he was driven by ambulance to Virtua Hospital for observation as a precautionary measure.

A decision was made onsite after consultation with Brett Ingram, P.E., of the Township Engineer’s Office, to lower the lake over the next several days so that Public Works forces can safely replace all of the flashboards next week.

The Department of Public Works was assisted by the Country Lakes Volunteer Fire Company, Pemberton Township Office of Emergency Management, and the Burlington County Office of Emergency Management.
